The new ultrasound scanner and Transesophageal Echocardiogram (TOE) probe we’re hoping to bring to Leicester’s NICU and children’s heart centre represent some of the most advanced technology currently available. This isn’t about replacing what we already have—it’s about enhancing what we can offer to babies and their families, right at the bedside and in theatre.

The scanner we’re fundraising for provides state-of-the-art technology, offering a much clearer and more detailed view of a baby’s heart than ever before. It’s equipped with smart technology and AI-assisted functions, which means we can get accurate answers more quickly and with greater consistency, even in the most delicate and urgent situations.

For babies like Isabelle and Jack, born severely premature, this kind of visibility can guide the next steps in care with even greater confidence. It helps us better understand what’s going on in real time, so we can make well-informed decisions without delay. And for parents—who are navigating an incredibly frightening and uncertain time—it offers something invaluable, reassurance.

Alongside the scanner, the TOE probe is another key addition to our toolkit. This uses provides cutting-edge 4D imagery and is used during surgery and for our most complex babies, giving us a real-time view from inside the chest which has up until now only been possible for bigger children. This shows us how the heart is functioning as we operate so we can make sure that the repairs being done work. It’s a vital resource when dealing with tiny hearts that need the gentlest of hands.

Put simply, this equipment helps us deliver not just excellent care—but the very best care we can give. It means we can match our compassion with the most up-to-date technology available. When parents come through the doors of NICU, they’re often in shock. Their lives have changed in an instant. Knowing that we have access to this kind of equipment gives them confidence that their baby is in the safest, most capable hands. I’ve been doing this job for more than thirteen years, and what’s stayed with me throughout is how deeply parents remember the way they were made to feel during those early, anxious days. When they see that we’re using the best tools and technology to care for their child, it matters—deeply.

With your help, we can make sure Leicester’s NICU continues to lead the way in neonatal care. Please consider making a gift today and giving big for little hearts.
