Leicester Charity Brown Dog Cancer Charity to Raise £50,000 for New Ultrasound Machine

Local Leicester-based charity – Brown Dog has supported Leicester’s Hospitals Charity for many years. A volunteer-run organisation that fundraises to get the best equipment to improve diagnosis, surgery, and care for patients with cancer.

This year they have organised the Great Ridge Challenge on Saturday 24 June. To show support for Brown Dog Charity’s efforts to raise funds for his department, Dr Ram Vaidhyanath, Consultant Radiologist at Leicester’s Hospitals and his dedicated team at the Head and Neck Department of Leicester Royal Infirmary will join the group of fundraisers and embark on a 24-mile hike in the picturesque Peak District.

The target for the challenge is to raise £50,000 for a new Ultrasound machine which will provide better quality scans that will help diagnose cancer sooner and reduce the visits to the hospital for head and neck cancer patients.

Mark Storer from Brown Dog Charity said

“Brown Dog is a Leicestershire-based charity which is why it has supported Leicester Hospitals for the last 22 years by purchasing best-in-class equipment and helping local people fight cancer by providing better/earlier diagnosis, improved surgery, or enhanced patient care. Brown Dog is run totally by volunteers, which means it has no overheads, therefore every pound donated will go towards the ultrasound.”

Brown Dog Cancer Charity’s Great Ridge Challenge: Help Leicester Royal Infirmary Diagnose Head and Neck Cancer Sooner

Head and neck cancers like throat, mouth/jaw, voice box, food pipe, thyroid and salivary gland cancers affect thousands of individuals in the UK annually. Detecting these cancers early is crucial, and the Leicester Royal Infirmary’s Head and Neck department plays a pivotal role in diagnosis. By acquiring a new ultrasound machine, the clinical team will be able to scan and get a biopsy done on the same day helping an additional 350 people per month.

Acquiring this new state-of-the-art equipment for patients in Leicester will mean more people will have the best chance of receiving life-saving treatment early and hopefully be able to ring the bell.

Dr Ram Vaidhyanath believes the new equipment will be vital for fast-tracking cancer diagnosis and improving patient outcomes. He said:

“Everybody’s worried about a diagnosis of cancer. If they do have a diagnosis, they can be fast-tracked with this new equipment. That’s a big plus for us.”

Guests will be among the first to hear about the brand-new corporate offer, including joining the new Business Club and hear about the impact collaboration with businesses can have on the lives of NHS staff, patients and their carers at Leicester’s Hospitals.

Business leaders will also learn about the Charity’s current fundraising projects such as The Spiritual Care Centre Appeal and the calendar of exciting events that they are planning.

Sunita Patel, Head of Corporate and Community Fundraising, who has recently joined the Charity said: “Leicester Hospitals Charity has strong connections with local businesses across Leicester, Rutland, and Leicestershire. This event is a way of re-introducing them and new leaders to our work and the impact corporate support has across all areas of our three hospitals.

“From funding for the latest life-saving medical equipment that benefits patient care to equipping staff rooms with adequate kettles so that our hard-working staff can have a warm cup of tea or coffee during a busy shift.
