This October, seven local Leicester people will be scaling the heights and trekking up Kilimanjaro all to help fundraise for Leicester Hospitals Charity.
Dee Parmer and Jo West from Curry’s store in Fosse Park will be starting their journey on Sunday 2 October to help raise money for the Children’s Ward at Leicester’s Hospitals. Dee was touched by a story of a little boy born 10 years ago who fought many battles relating to his heart defects to other medical conditions.
Dee said: I am thankful to Leicester Hospitals Charity who raises money for the Children’s Hospital to continue the fantastic care they provide for the children across the region. The little boy whose story inspired me is now thriving and doing what a 10-year-old boy loves to do. Having the dedicated children’s heart congenital unit all on one site at Leicester Royal Infirmary is amazing. This is the future for our children, this is the treatment that any one of our children may need one day.
Dee went on to say: “I’m climbing Kilimanjaro to raise awareness of their mission and fundraise so the Children’s Hospital can continue serving our children. My climb and fundraising are dedicated to the little boy. My climb can’t measure up to the strength and endurance he has shown at such a young age, but he has become my driving force to do this.”
On the same weekend, Liesl Wrigglesworth and Zak Whitnell from NTT DATA will be taking on the challenge as well. Having worked with Leicester’s Hospitals for over seven years, the duo is aiming to show their commitment and raise visibility for the incredible service that is available to the community of Leicester.
Later in the month (23 October) Leicester’s Hospitals’ Chief Cardiac Physiologist Sophie Draycott, her sister Sally and partner Scott will be setting off and raising money for the Renal Care Department at Leicester’s Hospitals.
Sophie and Sally’s father was sadly diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (CKD) six years ago, and both have seen the gruelling toll this condition has taken on him and other patients with similar conditions. CKD can result in lengthy hospital stays, significant lifestyle changes and, in many cases, intensive surgery to help keep patients stable. They are hoping to help purchase 12 new TVs to keep patients distracted and entertained during their stays in the hospital.
Kamlesh Mistry, Community and Events Fundraising Manager for Leicester Hospitals Charity said: “We’re so proud of everyone taking on this amazing challenge. They’ve worked hard to raise the funds they need to get to Kilimanjaro and complete the distance. Thank you to everyone involved.”
